types of shelters, for different wind velocities (as recorded by the Standard anemometer of the Observatory) and for different depressions of the wet bulb thermometer.
5.
Humidities derived from readings thus corrected must, in the mean, be more accurate than those derived from uncorrected readings of unaspirated dry and wet bulb thermometers, though individual corrections may not be perfectly accurate owing to the fact that the relation between the velocity of the air passing over the thermometers in a shelter and that of the outside air may vary; and also for other reasons which can only be investigated by patient experiment.
6. At Hong Kong an electric fan plays on to the metallic thermometers of a Richard hygrograph during the last minute of each hour, so that at the hour the instrument records the temperature of the air and of evaporation in a current of air, the velocity of which is probably never less than 6 miles per hour. The fan, which is 12 inches in diameter, is fixed in a pipe, 14 inches in diameter and 4 feet long, at the end

nearest to the thermometers and a distance of 24 feet from them, Air is drawn into the shelter through this pipe and blown on to the thermometers.
7.
The data is being tabulated under wind velocity, wind direction, wet bulb readings and difference between dry and
wet.
The enquiry is not sufficiently advanced to show whether
the correction to an unaspirated wet bulb thermometer in the Hong Kong shelter varies with the wind direction or with the temperature of evaporation, but it is already evident that the
correction varies directly with the difference between the dry and wet bulb readings and inversely with the wind velocity. 8. The Tables for deriving humidities from readings of the
wet bulb thermometer which have been corrected for wind
velocity must be based on observations with the whirling
